Elefante Gigante

After 5 hours of class at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Liz and I decided to explore more of Barcelona. We made our way down towards the sea-shore and found el Parc de la Ciutadella. The park was awesome! I think what made it even more interesting was that we had just talked about it in our civilization and culture class today. Historically, the park was a war fortress, created under Philip V of Spain to maintain control of the Catalan Citizens and not allow them to revolt for independence. Now, it’s a large park with a beautiful fountain, a giant elephant (well, technically it’s a ‘mamut,’ but I love elephants so I’m calling it an elephant), a museum, a lake, many pieces of art and statues, and the BCN Zoo. Years ago, the BCN Zoo had an albino gorilla named Snowflake. He died in 2004 😦 I bet that he would’ve been awesome to see!

I also learned some really cool facts about elephants in my class, too. In the 3rd century B.C.E., the vicious Carthaginians attempted to expand their territory from north Africa and the south of Spain up towards France, occupied by the Romans at the time. They brought elephants with them as war tools. Could you imagine being a Roman who had never even heard of an elephant or seen a beast that large, and now they were charging right towards you? However, the plan to use elephants soon backfired. The Romans realized that if you killed the driver of the elephant, the animal would just turn around and run the other way, crushing its own soldiers under its feet.

The trees in Barcelona are quite peculiar. One tree in the park had the weirdest/largest trunk/roots I’ve ever seen! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there’s anything like this in the States!

Right outside the park is the Arc de Triomf. I don’t think there’s any real significance to this Arc, but it was cool nonetheless.

Bienvenidos a Barcelona

!Estoy aqui! I am here! Barcelona is beautiful! The flight in from England was great. We flew over France and then just a bit over the Mediterranean Sea before landing in Barcelona. It’s much warmer here than it is in England, but still too cold for my liking.

Liz, my friend from school, and I are roommates for the next 6 weeks. We are staying in an apartment with a host family. The apartment is very nice and cozy. We have a balcony that has a fabulous view of the city and the mountains and Camp Nou – the Futbol Club Barcelona stadium! So Cool!!! I know Joe is really jealous…

Our host mom is very nice. She has only spoken Spanish to us so far, but its easy to understand her. The hard part is actually forming and saying the sentences out loud. But its fun to learn and I enjoy practicing my espanol. I know that I will become much better over these next 6 weeks.
We had time for a little nap before we had orientation for our program. We decided to leave early, which was a great idea considering we got lost on the way there. But, we were only about 15 minutes late. It didn’t matter anyway, we weren’t the only ones! After orientation we went to the Barcelona City Center, the heart of the city. We saw some beautiful buildings and architecture. Its very touristy here, too. But not nearly as congested as London!

We also went to Las Ramblas, which is a series of streets with restaurants, mercados, bars, vendors and all sorts of things. We had dinner at a tapas restaurant. Im not sure of all the things I ate, but most of them were quite tasty! And the Sangria de Cava, yummmmmmmmmmmmmm. Liz and I made our way home perfectly. I’m so glad I know how to work the tube system! After yet another busy day, I am ready for bed by 11. !Adios!
!Hasta pronto!

“The World is a…

“The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” ~St. Augustine

Hello all! My name is Nancy. Welcome to my blog. Im new with all of this, so be patient with me. This summer, I have the wonderful opportunity to travel to Europe! In just three days, I will be boarding a flight to Manchester, England. I have 6 days in Manchester to spend with one of my best friends, Geraldine. After that, I will be catching another flight to my real destination – Barcelona, Spain. I am going to be studying Spanish culture and language at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and living with a host family for 6 weeks. I am so excited!

I have a slight fear of planes and I have never been overseas before, so lets just say Tuesday should be interesting…

Gotta go pack! Check back later this week for more in my blog!
